THE MEANING OF OUR SUITE NAMES
We love our country and the great outdoors here at Stay of Queenstown so it was only appropriate to name our suites after some of the spectacular sights, tracks, hikes, shores and lakes of the South Island.
THE HEAPHY SUITE: The Heaphy Track is a popular tramping track in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located within the Kahurangi National Park and classified as one of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks by the Department of Conservation.
THE ROUTEBURN SUITE: The Routeburn track is classed as one of New Zealand Great Walks – a 32km hike. Known as the ultimate alpine adventure, weaving through meadows, reflective tarns, and alpine gardens. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular vistas over vast mountain ranges and valleys.
THE MILFORD SUITE: Milford Sound is a fiord in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rain forests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls, which plummet down its sheer sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory offers views of rare black coral and other marine life. Boat tours are a popular way to explore.
THE TEKAPO SUITE: Named after the beautiful Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo covers an area of 83 square kilometres (32 sq mi) and is at an altitude of 710 metres (2,330 ft) above sea level. The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Godley River, which has its source in the Southern Alps to the north.
THE ABEL TASMAN SUITE: AbelTasmanNational Park is a wilderness reserve at the north end of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for the Abel Tasman Coast Track, a long trail winding over beaches and across ridges between Marahau in the south and Wainui in the north. The headland at Separation Point is home to New Zealand fur seal colonies. Little blue penguins, bottlenose dolphins and seals inhabit the Tonga Island Marine Reserve.
THE RAKIURA SUITE: The Rakiura Track is a scenic 32-kilometre circular tramping track in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island in New Zealand. It is one of the New Zealand’s Great Walks. Hikers often take three days to walk it, but it can be done in one or two days when fit.
THE WAKATIPU SUITE: Lake Wakatipu is an inland lake (finger lake) in the South Island of New Zealand. It is in the southwest corner of the Otago region, near its boundary with Southland. Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Māori word Whakatipu wai-māori. You can probably see it out your window at Stay of Queenstown!
THE KEPLER SUITE: The Kepler Track is located in Fiordland National Park, in the mountains above Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau. Vast tussock-covered ridgelines and spectacular alpine vistas contrast with peaceful lakeside and valley beech forest on this 60km circular hiking wilderness adventure.
